Spirograph

Spirographs are toys that relate to the scientific study of movement by drawing shapes that help us understand how one object moves in response to another. I often use them as surface design, drawing them out on paper and collaging with them on the surface of my ceramic vessels. This body of work experiments with how these complex mathematical drawings can be translated into sculptural forms that freeze the movement of pen across paper in time. The delicate lace-like structures that are created remind me to be conscious of my own movements in relation to the “objects” that surround me whether they be literal, metaphorical, human, or otherwise.
